How we minimised on-site emissions with portable innovative battery solutions

Throughout a trial period of 6 weeks, Sunbelt Rentals worked with Telent to demonstrate the power of portable battery units in delivering an emission-free, silent means of consistent and efficient power for construction tools, lighting, and welfare equipment.

Instagrid One Max (230v)

Leading technology company Telent design, build, support and manage some of the UK’s most critical digital infrastructure projects.

With long-term projects being their forte, Telent are working on innovations that can deliver more sustainable ways of working by reducing carbon emissions in their everyday activities, to meet the ambitious climate plans shared by Telent and their customers. This includes reducing their carbon by 50% no later than 2030 through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). So, in 2023 their Procurement team sought the help of 150 existing suppliers to support them in doing just that by exploring new technology.

The Challenge

Telent are aiming for zero emissions on-site while carrying out their critical services. Although traditional fuel-powered generators are a reliable and efficient source of electricity, even the most advanced generators release carbon, as well as contributing to air and noise pollution. So, they wanted to explore alternative power sources for on-site kit that can offer cleaner and more efficient ways of working.

We were more than happy to put the prototype units to the test and were extremely impressed by their robust design and high energy density. This is a must on-site, where a constant and efficient power supply is crucial and usually provided by a fuel-powered generator or equipment. The units provided great flexibility, coping with everything from lighting to compaction plates. They were easy to handle and transport, but most importantly, much safer in comparison to handling fuels.

The Solution

As a long-term partner of Telent, the team at Sunbelt Rentals proposed and trialled a new product – the Instagrid One Max. This solution is a 20kg portable battery solution, delivering an emission-free, silent means of consistent and efficient power for construction tools, lighting, and welfare equipment on a single charge.

The Instragid One Max was provided to Telent across a 6-week period, covering a range of demanding workloads in the field, with an on-site apprentice tasked with reporting back on the effectiveness and general findings for Telent’s Green Solutions Working Group to then assess.

Sunbelt Rentals were delighted to partner with Telent to thoroughly test the Instagrid One Max in exploration of environmentally friendly technologies. Our joint effort focused on assessing its suitability as a practical alternative to traditional generators, serving 230v and 110v equipment and tools. By collaborating with Telent and the manufacturer, we gained invaluable insights, identified its advantages and features and discovered new potential applications.

The Result

With evaluations carried out in a multitude of Telent’s project activities, the results from the first trial came back extremely positive. The solution was such a success in fact that Telent are looking to extrapolate the Instagrid One Max out to cover other areas of the business. In addition, they are exploring the possibility of offering it to their sub-contractors in order to gain further insight into the product’s performance across the board.

The general consensus from those who used the Instagrid One Max first-hand throughout the trial was unequivocally positive. It was reported as being easy to transport single-handedly which provided maximum flexibility in the field, as well as offering long run-times with high peak power capabilities, delivered seamlessly.

Where a need for larger applications is present, there is also an option to couple 3 products together under the Instagrid Link docking station in order to deliver even more instant, emission-free power at the drop of a hat.

Partnership and collaboration is key to the innovation needed to meet our climate goals and I could not be happier with the outcome of the trials. Not only are we contributing to new ways of working which promote sustainability but unlocking many other benefits that innovations such as this bring including greater flexibility, safer working and long-term cost savings.
